Exhibition ideas/Sketchup

I wanted to create a Sketch-Up of the exhibition space to help figure workout how I could make best use of the space and how I would exhibit in the space if I had the option to use the space any way I wanted.

Sketch-up was rather hard to grasp, however, I persevered and after a while was able to create a shell of the gallery.

I added the windows because, when showing a video light was an important deciding factor in the final positioning of my work due to the fact that I was using a monitor screen and needed to make sure it was not facing any direct light which would result in  reflections.

Inserting Entrances/Exits to make sure they were clear for people to use.

Being able to go to the gallery and see the layout and size of the gallery helped with my final choice of positioning for the presentation of my work/video. However as this space was shared I wanted to make notes on how I would of presented my work if I had the space to myself and appropriate equipment.

Installation idea

Because I was exhibiting a video I also needed to think about audio and visuals, how I was going to present both.  I understood that because this was a group exhibition and the gallery was open plan I had to give consideration to others exhibiting in the space. Especially if they had video, however, I wanted to plan ways I could of exhibited if I did not need to worry about other peoples work.

Projector

I liked the idea of projecting my work because my video focused on the idea of immersing yourself in the subject to evoke feelings. A large wall that is not affected by windows or harsh light would have been suitable for this.

However, in the gallery they had metal pipes down all of the walls which would have interrupted my screen if I had projected my video on to the wall.   We did find them useful when distributing the spaces.

This is where I would have ideally put a projector and screen. I would have needed to test out how it would have looked due to the windows being so close and lighting from the ceiling may have caused issues.

Multiple Screens

Having multiple screens would mean I could have set up surrounding views creating more of a fear factor, as if encroaching on the space surrounding the viewer.  Unfortunately this would of came at a cost of finding plug sockets, more monitors and making sure the videos and sound were in sync.

Video among still images

I wanted to create an installation with the combination of both still images and my video. This would create an overwhelming scene, capturing that movement among the still leaving the viewers to wonder. (Below is my mind map)

However, after viewing the space and hearing the ideas of other I decided that this would be too much in such a small space.  It would look crowded and would take away the focus off of my video.

Installation Day

The first image at the top is the installation space we had to work with.

We started installing on the 15th-16th of January, as it was our first time curating and installing our works on the walls provided, it proved to be quite the task, although from the first sight it looked straightforward and easy.

The many problems we face were that we lacked the tools to mount our work in the first place as we had to share one drill amongst 4-5 students, this proved to be inefficient with time as our installation deadline was coming to a close.

However, we all managed to put up our work as we all supported each other with the installation.

We each all had our own methods of mounting some examples were; some using nails, MDF, velcro or they hang up their work using thin wires.

Research Of the Gallery & Sketch Up

Sun Pier House is an award winning gallery, tearoom and venue where we will be holding our Medway Festival Exhibition to which we have named Kaleidoscope. This name was chosen as we feel it represents the multiple and various ideas we each have as artists and photographers looking at the ideas of surface, time and archive.

The space itself is very open and bright due to the large windows which look over onto the River Medway. By visiting the gallery, myself and Penny took many pictures and measurements to allow us to reflect on the space once we had left.

With the combination of photos and measurements I then created a 3D model of the gallery space using SketchUp.

By signing up for a free trial I had to figure out how to use the software from scratch. Once I familiarised myself with all the tools I could use I started by using the line tool to sketch the floorplan.

I then created the ceiling heights as there are almost two separate spaces to the gallery and added in the measurements of the space.

By experimenting with the software I was also able to add in the floor and sofas as well as all the windows and doors of the gallery showing exactly where they are allowing us to figure out where everyone’s pieces of work could fit.

Allocation of Spaces

On Monday 14th, we went down the gallery space, arranging it with the owner, so that everyone could come down and choose where they wanted to go. We marked out the walls with sticky notes saying how big each space was, so it was easier for people to decide and work out what they wanted. Due to some peoples work being so large, we had to allocate spaces to them as there was not many places that they could go, for example one girl is doing four A0 prints, so there was only one place for her to go.

People came down to the space, or told us on facebook the places that they wanted, so we managed to get a place for everyone, and that everyone is happy with. We put another sticky note up on each wall saying who’s work is there, and also wrote it down in a note book.

We were worried about there not being enough space, but as people were coming in we realised that there was plenty, even though many peoples work is very large.

Measurements of Exhibition Space

The first thing we did was go down to the exhibition space in Sun Pier House, to be able to measure every wall and see the available space. We did this by using a tape measure and measuring each area before it had a break in the wall, e.g a plug socket or a pillar. This gave us all the measurements that we then needed for the sketch up of the space. We drew out both the plans for the rooms and wrote down their measurements, breaking them into individual spaces big enough for work to be hung or placed. We marked out where each obstruction was on the walls, like pipes and poles, places that would get in the way of work. Each plug socket as marked down, so we knew where it would be best for videos to go.

When we got back we decided to write down the measurements of A0, A1, A2, A3, so we could figure out if certain prints would fit in certain places, ready for when we have everyone come down to the space to decide where they want to go.
